When Hephaestus was first born, his mother Hera did not like how he looked so she threw him to the depths of the sea from Mount Olympus. That is why and how he got his lame leg. He was found by two Nereids who raised him for nine years inside a cave, far away and hidden from Hera. He did eventually return and was the first god to return to Mount Olympus after exile.
Hephaestus works in the bottom of a volcano with Cyclops, the one-eyed friend. They create thunderbolts for Zeus who is the master of all. Hephaestus has also created the first woman of the ancient world. Her name is Pandora.
Hephaestus has built all the palaces of the gods and the thrones. He built a lot of jewelry which he learned to make young when he was on Lemnos. He would construct them made of coral and pearls. He became so good at making them Hera wanted some. That is when Hera asked Zeus to have Hephaestus come back.
